  • Packing Tips for a Smooth Move

    1. Clear out as many unneeded items as possible. Have a yard sale or donate items that can be used to charity.
    2. Think about how your items will work in your new home. If you need to sell or give away furniture that won't fit do it before you move. Wait until after the move to purchase new furniture or appliances so they can be delivered directly to the new house.
    3. Start by packing things you don't use often. You may be able to pack up the attic, garage, and/or basement as early as weeks before the move.
    4. Set up a staging area for packed boxes. If your home is on the market you may want to use the garage or even a storage unit rather than have a room in the main living area filled with boxes.
    5. Pack items in sturdy boxes. It may be worth paying for quality moving materials rather than have items break along the way. Check online classified sites or ask around - someone who has recently moved may be trying to get rid of their gently used boxes.
    6. Use bubble wrap or blank newsprint to pack dishes, glasses, and other kitchen items. The ink from old newspapers can transfer to the items wrapped within them meaning you'd have to wash them all before putting them away.
    7. If you want to line drawers and cabinets before filling them with your belongings buy new liner paper and pack it in a box of your kitchen items labeled "open first" - along with a pair of scissors, measuring tape, and any other tools you'll need.
    8. Pack by room and carefully label boxes with the contents and the room they should end up in at the new house.
    9. Set aside items that will travel with you. These could include valuable or sentimental items, children's special toys, or those things you'll need during the trip to the new home or soon after you arrive.
    10. Back up files on computers and laptops onto an external hard drive before moving them. Bring the external hard drive with you when you travel.
    11. Make sure that boxes aren't too heavy to lift.
    12. If you have hired movers be on hand to answer questions they might have. Check boxes and furniture for any damage that may have occurred when it is delivered.
